Welcome to the wonderful world of trail running! In this very first clinic, and the first in a series of four prior to the COP 5 Peaks race on May 22nd, we will focus specifically on the differences between running roads vs trails.
When running off-road, we need to be more mindful of such concerns as variations in terrain, obstacles, trail conditions, wildlife, etc. It is of utmost importance to assure we are familiar with our route or course, and that we are prepared for any sudden changes in weather. This will help prevent us from getting lost and will keep us comfortable and safe throughout our runs.
We'll spend the first 10-15 minutes discussing road vs trail in more detail, then get out on the trails to give it a go!

It is a week prior to our first clinic on Saturday, April 10th, at 12 Mile Coulee, and I managed to get out for a run yesterday evening on the trails that we will be running on. Although this is "dry" Calgary, if we are going to find mud, this is one of the seasons we'll find it, as it warms up and snow melts! The trail is a mix of single and dual track. Once we get down into the single track of the ravine, there is a mix of dry and wet/muddy patches, very small streams to hop over, and a few bits of snow here and there. So, a true trail run...a mix of everything! A change of shoes and a towel in the car will be good to have, if possible. Looking forward to seeing you all Saturday the 10th!
ReplyDeleteFantastic 1st clinic, everyone! Thanks for coming out. Although a bit brisk upon starting out, the weather was absolutely fantastic, and people were starting to shed layers 15 minutes into the run! Keep thinking about those form/technique pointers, and will build on them next week!
